Mileage deduction calculator
Your miles at the IRS standard rate for the dates you drove them, plus parking and tolls. What comes out is the amount you deduct, not the tax it saves.
Business mileage deduction, 2026
- 6,000 mi × 72.5¢$4,350.00
- 6,000 mi × 76¢$4,560.00
Self-employed? It goes on Schedule C, line 9, with the vehicle questions in Part IV. Most employees cannot deduct mileage on a federal return.
Log these miles automaticallyHow the figure is worked out
Miles times the IRS standard rate for the dates you drove them, plus parking and tolls at what you paid. Each line is rounded to the cent, and the lines are added up. Every rate the calculator uses is on the IRS mileage rates page, back to 2011.
Parking and tolls count for business, medical, charity and military moving drives. Parking at your regular place of work is part of the commute, and the commute is not a business drive.
Questions
Before you file
No. A deduction lowers the income you pay tax on, so what it saves depends on your tax bracket, and for the self-employed on self-employment tax as well. It is not a refund of the same amount.
Yes. The tax code allows no deduction for a car without adequate records: the date, miles, destination and purpose of each business drive. A free template has a column for each, and what the IRS wants in a mileage log explains why.
No. Each mile takes the rate in force the day it was driven, so in 2026 the miles before July 1, 2026 and from that day on are priced separately. One rate for the whole year is wrong whichever one you pick.
Not with the standard rate: it stands in for gas, oil, repairs, insurance, registration and depreciation. The other method is the car's actual costs times its business share. To use the standard rate for a car you own, you have to choose it in the car's first business year; for a leased car, it is the whole lease or not at all.
