Should I add odometer readings?

Shown on the website

Why they matter

A mileage log is strongest when the vehicle’s total miles for the year are pinned down, and odometer readings are how that is done: one near the start of the year, one near the end, and the miles the log claims sit inside a provable total. The report prints them in its vehicle table. With one within a week of the period’s first day and one in its last week, a report of all drives also takes the car’s other miles from them: the odometer’s miles less business and commuting.

Adding one

A reading is the number off the dash, and the date it was true:

  1. Sign in at my.odo.tax and open Settings → Odometer
  2. Pick the vehicle
  3. Click Add reading
  4. Enter the reading and the date, and save

Backfilling and mistakes

A January photo of the dash can be entered in August. OdoTax warns when a reading is lower than an earlier one or higher than a later one — odometers don’t run backwards — and still lets you keep it with Save anyway. A vehicle has one reading per day.
