Can OdoTax tell my cars apart by Bluetooth?

Shown on iPhone

On the iPhone

An iPhone does not let an app link a car’s Bluetooth. What tells OdoTax which car you are in is an automation in Apple’s Shortcuts app: when the phone joins the car’s CarPlay, it runs OdoTax’s Car connected action for that car, so the drive starts at once and goes on it. It takes about two minutes, once:

  1. In OdoTax, open Settings → Vehicles, tap the car and, under Start drives when connected, tap Open Shortcuts
  2. In Shortcuts, tap Automation, then New Automation — or +, if you already have automations
  3. Tap CarPlay — Is Connected is already ticked
  4. Tap Run Immediately, then Next
  5. Tap Create New Shortcut — on some iPhones, New Blank Automation — then search for Car connected and tap it
  6. Check the car named in the action — in blue, before connected — then tap Done

Every screen, and how to check that it works: Can a drive start the moment I get in the car? Drives that no automation names go on the Default vehicle, and a single drive’s vehicle can be changed on the drive, under Vehicle.

Step 1 of 4 · Open Shortcuts

No CarPlay, or more than one car

Use the car’s Bluetooth instead. The CarPlay trigger runs in every CarPlay car the phone joins; a Bluetooth one runs only for the stereo you pick, so with two cars you make one automation for each:

  1. At the third step, tap Bluetooth instead of CarPlay
  2. Tap Choose and pick the car’s stereo — the iPhone lists the devices it has paired with, and a car’s is often named after it
  3. Go on from Run Immediately as above, and pick this car in Car connected

The car has to have been paired with the iPhone first, in the iPhone’s Settings → Bluetooth.
