Drives and sorting

Why is there a drive I didn’t take?

The phone was in a moving vehicle

OdoTax records a drive when your phone travels in a vehicle. It cannot tell who was driving, so a ride as a passenger — a friend’s car, a taxi, a bus — is recorded like a drive of your own. Delete it when you sort your drives: a drive adds nothing to your deduction until it is classified, by you, by Auto-classify or by a frequent drive. To keep a ride out of the log, pause tracking before you set off: How do I pause tracking?

What OdoTax leaves out by itself

A walk or a run is not recorded: the phone’s motion sensors tell it from driving. Neither is anything shorter than 0.2 mi or over in less than a minute, and a flight is dropped by its speed. A trip faster than a car usually goes — a fast train, say — or one that moved like a ferry crossing is kept but marked Held, and counts for nothing until you look at it: Why does a drive say Held? If a walk still came through as a drive, delete it and send a message with the date — a person will look.

A trip you don’t recognise

A drive the phone did not record says where it came from: Added by hand, Added by Claude or Imported from Google Timeline. Every phone signed in to your account records the drives it is on, so a phone somebody else carries puts their drives in your log. Settings → Devices in the web account lists the phones signed in; to stop one, sign out of OdoTax on that phone, with Settings → Log out. If that phone is no longer in your hands, set a new password — every other phone and browser is signed out, and connected apps such as Claude are disconnected: How do I set or change my password?. When two of your phones ride in the same car, OdoTax keeps one recording and sets the other aside.

Deleting it

In Trips, click the drive to open it at the side, click •••, then Delete drive, and confirm. To delete several at once, tick them, then More in the bar that appears, and Delete.

A deleted drive cannot be brought back. Marked Personal instead, it would stay in your log, and a report of all drives would list it under the car it is on.

Miles after you parked

OdoTax ends a drive once the car has been stopped for about five minutes; the wait keeps a red light or a short stop from cutting it in two. If a drive’s line on the map runs on past where you parked, open the drive in Trips, click Open full route map, then Report an issue and Location — a person looks at the drive.
